Less Than, More Than

“You’re less than a boy/girlfriend, but more than a friend.”

To me, that statement means that the person has always been there for you, and has the potential to be more than a friend, but for whatever reason (time, circumstance, situation, etc), they can only be a friend. Or should only be a friend, at any rate, but the lines between friends and more than friends can be a blurry one and sometimes the line gets crossed. Maybe there have been a few romantic liaisons with that person, but all parties knew that the end result could never be a full and proper relationship. The highest achievement could only ever be friends till the end, even if one or both wish that they could be more.

Question of the Week: How would you interpret that statement?
